The story of Airwide Solutions begins not with its founding in 2004, but with a foundational moment in mobile history. In 1992, an engineer at Sema Group, which would later become part of Airwide, sent the world's first SMS text message. This legacy of messaging infrastructure became the company's core. Airwide Solutions was officially formed in 2004 through a merger between Taral Networks, co-founded by Dr. Robert J. Wang, and the messaging unit of Schlumberger. The company established itself as a key provider of mobile infrastructure software, enabling wireless communication services for operators around the world. Their technology was a critical, yet often unseen, component powering the rapidly growing mobile messaging ecosystem. As the mobile world evolved, so did Airwide. In 2007, the company expanded its capabilities by acquiring the Finnish company First Hop. The pivotal event in Airwide's journey came in May 2011, when it was acquired by Mavenir Systems, a company focused on next-generation 4G and LTE solutions. This acquisition was a strategic move by Mavenir to integrate Airwide's deep expertise in mobile messaging as the industry transitioned towards converged voice, video, and messaging services over LTE networks.
