Agrotoken
Grain-backed, transactional digital asset used to save or exchange for supplies, services, and other assets
About Agrotoken
Founded in 2019 by Eduardo Novillo Astrada, a former professional polo player, and Ariel Scaliter, a technology consultant specializing in blockchain, Agrotoken emerged from their vision to transform agricultural finance. Novillo Astrada's background in professional sports and subsequent role as president of the Argentine Polo Association connected him with Scaliter, who introduced him to blockchain's potential. This led to the creation of a platform to digitize agricultural commodities, providing liquidity for farmers' most significant immobilized asset: their grains.
Agrotoken operates as a tokenization infrastructure for agricultural commodities, initially focusing on grains like soybeans, corn, and wheat. The company enables farmers and other participants in the agricultural ecosystem to convert physical grain reserves into digital assets, or "agrotokens." Each token is backed one-to-one by a ton of grain held in a physical silo, verified by a Proof of Grain Reserve (PoGR) system. This process provides farmers with a liquid asset they can use for transactions, as collateral for loans, or simply to hold as a store of value pegged to the commodity's price. The platform serves farmers, suppliers, financial institutions, and merchants. Revenue is generated primarily through fees for tokenization and de-tokenization, as well as transaction fees on its platform.
The company's core product is its digital asset platform which issues stablecoins collateralized by grains, with tokens for soy (SOYA), corn (CORA), and wheat (WHEA). These tokens can be used for a variety of financial activities, including purchasing supplies and equipment or making payments via a Visa-backed card. This system enhances transparency, security, and efficiency in agricultural transactions by leveraging blockchain technology, initially on Ethereum and later expanding to multichain support including Algorand and Polygon. The firm has successfully tokenized over 230,000 tons of grain, facilitating more than $70 million in transactions.
Recognizing that the underlying infrastructure could serve broader applications, the company launched Justoken. This strategic evolution extends the firm's tokenization-as-a-service (TaaS) capabilities beyond agriculture to industries such as energy, mining, and food & beverages. Justoken leverages its proprietary blockchain infrastructure and sector-specific expertise to help businesses digitize real-world assets, aiming to improve liquidity, transparency, and efficiency across various markets. The company has raised $17.5 million in two seed rounds, with significant investments from entities like Visa and Bunge, which are fueling its expansion and product development.
