Agillion enables companies to provide customers with a level of service they've never encountered online
About Agillion
Agillion emerged in 1998, co-founded by Steve Papermaster and Frank Moss, during the height of the dot-com boom. Based in Austin, Texas, the company aimed to provide customer relationship management (CRM) solutions tailored for small businesses. The core of its business was a web-based service that enabled companies to manage all customer information within a single, dynamic database.
The service, branded as Agillion CustomerPages(SM), allowed its clients to generate personalized, interactive websites for each of their customers, facilitating a two-way communication and information-sharing channel. This was designed to streamline customer interactions and consolidate data. The business model was subscription-based, with clients paying a monthly fee to access the platform via a web browser. Agillion's name itself signified its mission: "agility for the millions," pointing to its focus on the small business market.
The company attracted significant attention from the investment community, securing a substantial Series C funding round of $40 million in November 1999. This round was led by prominent institutional investors including Morgan Stanley, MSD Capital, Goldman Sachs, and Cisco. Despite this strong financial backing, Agillion's operational execution faltered. The company became known for extravagant expenditures, including a high-profile Super Bowl commercial and lavish company trips, which rapidly depleted its capital.
Ultimately, Agillion failed to gain sufficient market traction, attracting only a few dozen subscribers. The minimal revenue generated was not enough to sustain its high burn rate. Faced with financial mismanagement and an inability to build a viable customer base, the company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and ceased operations in July 2001, marking a well-documented cautionary tale from its era.
