About Agensys

Agensys, Inc. operated as a biotechnology firm with a clear focus on pioneering cancer therapeutics. The company was established in 1996, initially named UroGenesys, by a collective of scientists from UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, led by Dr. Arie Belldegrun, and later joined by Dr. Donald B. Rice as CEO and Dr. Aya Jakobovits. Dr. Rice brought extensive executive experience from his time as CEO of Teledyne Technologies and the RAND Corporation, as well as his service as Secretary of the Air Force. The company's foundation was built upon discoveries made in the founders' labs, aiming to translate academic research into clinical applications for cancer patients.

The firm's core business was the discovery and development of therapeutic fully human monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) designed to treat solid tumor cancers. Its strategy involved identifying proprietary cancer targets within various solid tumors and then generating a pipeline of antibody products. Agensys applied differential gene expression technology to human tissues to identify these targets, successfully pinpointing 30 proprietary targets across 14 different cancer types, including prostate, kidney, pancreatic, ovarian, and lung cancer. Revenue and growth were driven by a dual approach: licensing its proprietary targets and early-stage antibody products to partners, while also co-developing and co-commercializing other candidates, such as those in its significant collaboration with Seattle Genetics.

Agensys developed a robust product pipeline featuring both 'naked' antibodies and ADCs, the latter of which were created using technology from Seattle Genetics. These ADCs are designed to selectively deliver a potent cell-killing agent to cancer cells, thereby minimizing damage to healthy cells. The company possessed comprehensive in-house capabilities, from target discovery and antibody generation to GMP manufacturing for preclinical and early-phase clinical trials. A significant milestone occurred in November 2007 when Astellas Pharma Inc. acquired Agensys for an upfront payment of $387 million, with potential for an additional $150 million in milestones. Astellas positioned Agensys as the cornerstone of its biologics and oncology research and development efforts. However, in 2017, Astellas announced the wind-down of Agensys's research operations, citing a strategic shift away from ADCs toward other oncology technologies. The Santa Monica facilities were subsequently sold to Kite Pharma, a unit of Gilead Sciences, in 2018.
