The company was founded in Latvia in 2015 by Dainis Kruze, Janis Putrams, and Andris Dambis. The founders, who had previous experience in the fleet tracking business, initially focused on heavy-lift drones for various applications before pivoting to the wind industry after participating in the Y Combinator accelerator in 2018. This strategic shift led to a focus on robotics over drone-based solutions.

Aerones' business model centers on providing a suite of on-site services for wind farm operators, which is faster and safer than traditional methods that rely on rope access technicians. The company's robotic systems can operate in more adverse weather conditions, reducing turbine downtime. Its services include internal and external blade inspections, lightning protection system testing, cleaning, and repairs such as leading-edge restoration and coating applications. Aerones utilizes proprietary robotic platforms, including crawlers for internal inspections and robotic arms for a variety of maintenance tasks. The company serves major global wind turbine manufacturers and operators, including NextEra, GE, Vestas, Enel, and Siemens Gamesa, representing over 50% of the world's wind power capacity.

The company has experienced significant growth, nearly tripling its revenue and expanding its operations globally, with headquarters in Riga, Latvia, and a U.S. hub in Dallas, Texas. Aerones has raised a total of $115 million over nine funding rounds. A key Series A round in December 2022 raised $38.9 million, and a Series B round in June 2025 secured $62 million with participation from investors like Activate Capital, S2G, Lightrock, and Blume Equity. As of July 2023, Aerones had serviced 6,000 turbines across 25 countries. The firm is also advancing into AI-driven analytics to support predictive maintenance, creating a customer platform for data-driven decision-making.
