Adaptimmune

Adaptimmune is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of engineered T-cell receptor (TCR) therapies to treat solid tumors. The company was founded in 2008 as a spin-out from MediGene AG's UK research subsidiary, with scientific origins tracing back to research from the University of Oxford. Co-founded by James Noble, who served as CEO until 2019, the company established its headquarters in Oxfordshire, UK, with significant operations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Adaptimmune went public with an IPO on NASDAQ in May 2015.

The company's core technology is its proprietary SPEAR (Specific Peptide Enhanced Affinity Receptor) T-cell platform, which engineers a patient's own T-cells to identify and destroy cancer cells. This approach is designed to overcome the challenges of treating solid tumors, a significant area of unmet medical need where other cell therapies have faced difficulties. In August 2024, Adaptimmune achieved a major milestone with the FDA's accelerated approval for its first product, Tecelra (afami-cel). Tecelra is the first engineered T-cell therapy approved for a solid tumor, specifically for adult patients with unresectable or metastatic synovial sarcoma.

Adaptimmune's business model was historically centered on extensive R&D, funded by collaborations and public markets, but is now transitioning to a commercial focus. Following the approval of Tecelra, the company has been building out its commercial infrastructure, including a network of authorized treatment centers across the U.S. However, in July 2025, Adaptimmune announced an agreement to sell Tecelra and other next-generation cell therapies to US WorldMeds. This strategic shift narrows the company's focus to its internal discovery assets, including therapies targeting PRAME and CD70, with a business model now more dependent on milestone payments and future licensing deals.
