About ActivBiotics
ActivBiotics, Inc. operated as a biopharmaceutical firm with a strategic focus on developing and commercializing treatments for inflammatory diseases and bacterial infections. The company was incorporated in Delaware on October 1, 1996, initially under the name Merlin Technologies, Inc., before rebranding to ActivBiotics on December 21, 2001. Headquartered in Lexington, Massachusetts, the company directed its efforts towards building a pipeline of proprietary therapeutic agents.
The company's business model centered on advancing its product candidates through rigorous clinical trials to gain regulatory approval and subsequently bring them to market. A key milestone was the acquisition of Metaphore Pharmaceuticals in January 2006, a move intended to broaden its development pipeline. Throughout its operational history, ActivBiotics secured significant funding, raising over $100 million from investors, including Healthcare Ventures, to support its research and development activities. The company also pursued an initial public offering (IPO) and had applied to be listed on the NASDAQ under the symbol "ACTV," but these plans were later withdrawn.
ActivBiotics' product pipeline featured several candidates. The lead product, Rifalazil, was an orally administered antibacterial agent investigated for treating intermittent claudication associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). This program received Fast Track designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Another notable candidate, acquired through the Metaphore merger, was M40403, a small molecule superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetic designed to address various inflammatory conditions. The preclinical pipeline included ABI-0043, an antibacterial agent showing potential against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Despite promising initial stages and achieving milestones like completing Phase III trial enrollment for Rifalazil, the company faced a critical setback. In late 2007, Rifalazil failed in its clinical trials for peripheral arterial disease, leading the company to cease operations and initiate the liquidation of its assets, including its compound libraries and intellectual property, through an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors.
