Action Pharma
Action Pharma develops pharmaceutical products and treatment concepts for cardiovascular, inflammatory and acquired metabolic diseases
About Action Pharma
Action Pharma A/S was a Danish biotechnology company founded in 2000, emerging from biomedical research conducted at Aarhus University. The company was established by professors Søren Nielsen and Jørgen Frøkiær, who translated their foundational research into a commercial enterprise focused on developing novel drug candidates. Action Pharma's business model was centered on discovering and advancing new drugs that target melanocortin receptors to the clinical proof-of-concept stage, with the ultimate goal of partnering with larger pharmaceutical companies for late-stage development and commercialization.
The company's primary therapeutic focus was on organ protection in critical medical situations, such as post-surgical organ dysfunction, and treating inflammatory and metabolic diseases. Its lead asset was a drug candidate named AP214, a hormone analogue developed to prevent acute kidney injury (AKI) in high-risk patients undergoing major cardiac surgery. AP214 works by targeting both systemic inflammation and cellular death caused by a lack of blood flow during surgical procedures. This was a significant area of unmet medical need, as there were no approved pharmaceuticals specifically for preventing post-surgical AKI.
Action Pharma successfully navigated its lead candidate through multiple clinical trial phases. The company completed dosing in a Phase IIb clinical trial for AP214 and announced positive top-line results in September 2011, demonstrating the drug's safety and efficacy in reducing kidney injury. This achievement was a culmination of years of development, supported by several funding rounds from investors including Sunstone Capital, Global Life Science Ventures, and InnovationsKapital, which raised over $28 million. In May 2012, Action Pharma achieved its strategic objective by entering into a landmark agreement with the global healthcare company Abbott (now AbbVie following a corporate separation). Abbott acquired all global rights to AP214 for a one-time cash payment of $110 million, with Abbott assuming all future development and commercialization responsibilities. This transaction marked a successful exit for Action Pharma's investors and the dissolution of the company, transferring the promising renal care asset into the pipeline of a major pharmaceutical player.
