About Actiance
Actiance, Inc. provides solutions for securing, managing, and ensuring compliance for a wide array of digital communications. Originally established as FaceTime Communications in 1997, the company focused on enabling instant messaging, web chat, and email for call center and CRM functions. In 2011, it rebranded to Actiance after Apple acquired the FaceTime brand.

The company's business model revolves around providing governance platforms that address regulatory compliance, security, archiving, and eDiscovery for business communications. Actiance serves highly regulated industries, with a significant client base in the financial services sector—including top banks in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Asia—as well as government agencies. Revenue is generated through both on-premises software installations and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) deployments. Their platforms manage and analyze business communications to uncover insights and ensure adherence to legal standards.
Actiance developed a suite of products to manage security and compliance across numerous platforms. Key offerings included the Unified Security Gateway (USG), which combined content monitoring and security for Web 2.0 applications, instant messaging, and unified communications. Other products like Socialite and Vantage offered granular control over social media and unified communications platforms such as Skype, respectively. These tools were designed to help organizations manage regulatory requirements from bodies like FINRA, IIROC, FCA, and MiFID II by enabling features like message blocking, data loss prevention, and ethical wall management.
In November 2017, the investment firm K1 Investment Management acquired Actiance and initiated its merger with Smarsh, another K1 portfolio company specializing in information archiving. The merger, completed in September 2018, created a combined entity operating under the Smarsh brand. This strategic combination aimed to provide a comprehensive solution for capturing, archiving, and analyzing over 100 different communication channel types, from email and social media to mobile messaging and voice. The new entity serves over 6,500 customers globally, consolidating its position in the enterprise information archiving market.
