Aceleron

Aceleron was a clean technology company that developed serviceable, upgradable, and recyclable lithium-ion batteries. The firm was founded in 2016 by Dr. Amrit Chandan and Carlton Cummins, who identified that conventional batteries, with their welded or glued components, were not designed for maintenance, leading to significant waste. Their patented design used compression and removable fasteners, enabling the batteries to be taken apart for repair, component replacement, or technology upgrades, embodying a circular economy approach.

The founders met at an energy trade show in 2015. Dr. Chandan holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering with a focus on fuel cell technology from the University of Birmingham. Mr. Cummins, originally from Barbados, is a design engineer specializing in sustainable design and clean energy systems. Both founders were recognized in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for their work.

Aceleron's business model focused on providing sustainable energy storage for various applications, including residential use, light electric vehicles, and commercial clients in sectors like hospitality. The company launched its 'Essential' battery range in 2021, a modular and portable solution available in multiple voltages. A key part of its strategy involved expanding into emerging markets, particularly in Africa, to provide reliable power in rural communities and for e-mobility. The company raised over £9.5 million from investors including BGF, Mercia Asset Management, and Mobility 54, a subsidiary of the Toyota Group. However, after failing to secure further investment, Aceleron entered administration in September 2023. In early 2024, its business assets were acquired by ADVIK Hi-Tech.
