Accumetrics develops VerifyNow System, a suite of assays used in assessing the platelet function
About Accumetrics
Founded in 1996, Accumetrics was a privately-held medical device company based in San Diego that specialized in point-of-care (POC) diagnostics for assessing patient responses to antiplatelet therapies. The company's core business involved the development, manufacturing, and marketing of its flagship VerifyNow product line. This system was designed for use in hospital settings, including cardiac catheterization labs and operating rooms, to provide rapid platelet reactivity results for patients undergoing treatment with medications like aspirin and clopidogrel.
The VerifyNow system operates on a turbidimetric-based optical detection method, measuring platelet-induced aggregation through an increase in light transmittance. The platform consists of a stand-alone instrument and single-use disposable assay devices containing the necessary reagents, which simplifies the testing process by eliminating the need for pipetting or extensive sample preparation. Its primary function is to help clinicians determine how effectively a patient's platelets are being inhibited by antiplatelet drugs. This information is critical for managing patients to identify risks related to bleeding or adverse cardiac events, and to assess compliance with prescribed therapy. The product line includes specific tests such as the PRUTest for measuring P2Y12 receptor blockade and the Aspirin Test for detecting platelet dysfunction due to aspirin.
In a significant strategic move within the cardiovascular diagnostics market, Accumetrics was acquired by ITC Nexus Holding Co. on September 1, 2013. ITC, a major player in hemostasis management and POC coagulation testing with its Hemochron product line, combined forces with Accumetrics to create a more comprehensive cardiovascular diagnostics business. Following the acquisition, the merged entity was rebranded as Accriva Diagnostics, with its headquarters established in San Diego. The leadership of the new company was formed by executives from both ITC and Accumetrics, with ITC's John Sperzel serving as CEO and Accumetrics' CFO, Greg Tibbitts, taking on the role of CFO for Accriva Diagnostics. This merger was seen as an opportunity to accelerate the global adoption of the VerifyNow system by leveraging ITC's established market presence.
