Acacia Pharma

Biotech & Life Sciences · Cambridge, United Kingdom · Founded 2006 · IPO 2018

Hospital pharmaceuticals for surgery-related side effects MoreLess

Acacia Pharma is a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing products for patients undergoing surgery, invasive procedures, or chemotherapy. Founded in 2007 by individuals including Julian Clive Gilbert and Gabriel Max Fox, the company aimed to address unmet needs in supportive care. Their expertise in clinical and pharmaceutical development guided the company through significant milestones, including an IPO on the Euronext Brussels exchange in 2018.

The company's business model centers on identifying, developing, and commercializing specialized hospital products in the US. Its main products are BARHEMSYS® and BYFAVO®. BARHEMSYS® (amisulpride injection) is an antiemetic used for the treatment and prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). It is the first and only product approved for rescue treatment of PONV in patients who have not responded to initial prophylaxis. BYFAVO® (remimazolam for injection) is an intravenous benzodiazepine sedative used for sedation during short medical procedures, such as colonoscopies, lasting 30 minutes or less. This product was in-licensed for the US market. The company also has a late-stage candidate, APD403, for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV).

In June 2022, Acacia Pharma was acquired by Eagle Pharmaceuticals, Inc., in a deal valued at approximately $104 million. The acquisition was a strategic move for Eagle to expand its acute care and hospital product portfolio, integrating Acacia's commercialized assets into its existing sales infrastructure. Following the acquisition, Acacia Pharma operates as a subsidiary of Eagle Pharmaceuticals.
