About 51Talk
51Talk, officially the China Online Education Group, operates as a global online education platform with a primary focus on English language instruction. The company was founded in 2011 by Jack Jiajia Huang and Ting Shu. The initial idea stemmed from Huang's observation of the high demand and lack of accessible, affordable options for conversational English education in his hometown in China. Before starting 51Talk, Huang and Shu, who are husband and wife, co-founded TalkChina in 2007, an online platform for teaching Chinese to Japanese students. Huang holds a bachelor's degree in Japanese from Tsinghua University and worked at Mitsubishi Corporation in China, while Shu earned a master's in language science from the University of Tokyo and previously worked at Deloitte.
The company's business model is centered on connecting students with a large pool of remote teachers, primarily from the Philippines, for live, one-on-one interactive English lessons. This approach was a strategic decision made after research identified Filipino teachers as a good fit due to their high English proficiency, neutral accent, and cultural familiarity. Revenue is generated through the sale of course packages and services to its clients. The platform serves a wide range of students, from children aged 3 to adults, across more than 50 countries. Students purchase lesson packages and can schedule sessions on-demand via the company's proprietary technology, including the Air Class teaching system.
A significant milestone in the company's history was its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on June 10, 2016, under the ticker symbol COE, which raised approximately $45.6 million. However, the company faced a major operational challenge in 2021 due to the Chinese government's "Double Reduction" policy. This policy banned for-profit tutoring in core K-9 subjects and prohibited foreign-based teachers from tutoring students in mainland China, significantly impacting 51Talk's primary market. In response, 51Talk undertook a strategic pivot. In June 2022, it sold its mainland China business to an entity controlled by CEO Jack Huang for a nominal sum and shifted its strategic focus to overseas markets. The company is now headquartered in Singapore and is concentrating on expansion across Southeast Asia, Europe, and other regions, while also diversifying into adult language education.
