About 4Home

Founded in 2006, 4Home, Inc. emerged as a software and services provider focused on the connected home market. The company developed an XML-based software platform, ControlPoint, which enabled OEM hardware vendors and broadband service providers to offer applications and fee-based services to consumers. Its business model centered on providing this carrier-grade, standards-based platform to partners, who in turn would deliver services to their end-users for a monthly fee.

The company's core offerings revolved around home control services, including energy management, home security and monitoring, media management, and remote home health. The ControlPoint platform allowed consumers to monitor and control various devices within their homes through a unified interface on mobile phones, TVs, or computers. Strategic partners included major players like Verizon, with whom 4Home collaborated to pilot and launch home automation services. This partnership allowed Verizon FiOS customers to remotely manage door locks, cameras, thermostats, and lighting. 4Home secured venture capital funding from investors including Verizon Ventures, Parker Price Venture Capital, and Pond Venture Partners, raising a total of $8.74 million over its lifetime.

A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Motorola Mobility in December 2010. The acquisition was a strategic move by Motorola to strengthen its software portfolio and expand its vision of converged experiences in the home. Following this, Motorola Mobility itself was acquired by Google in 2012. Subsequently, the Motorola Home business, which included the 4Home assets, was sold by Google and later dismantled by its then-owner Arris in 2013, marking the end of 4Home's journey as an independent and then subsidiary entity.
