3DSP
3DSP Corp, a developer of digital signal processing intellectual property solutions
About 3DSP
3DSP Corporation was a fabless semiconductor company established in 1997 by co-founders Kan Lu and June Jiang, alongside executives from prominent technology firms including Texas Instruments, Sony, and Rockwell. Headquartered in Irvine, California, the firm specialized in developing licensable intellectual property (IP) for digital signal processor (DSP) solutions.
The company's strategic focus was on the design and provision of configurable DSP architectures for the system-on-a-chip (SoC) market. This technology was developed to empower system designers to create custom silicon solutions for emerging applications in broadband communications, multimedia, and wireless technologies. The core of its offering was a proprietary, configurable DSP architecture based on a Super Scaler Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) design, intended to deliver high performance and flexibility. One of its products was the DSP-Shuttle, a reconfigurable and synthesizable DSP bus controller designed for SoC applications.
3DSP operated on an IP licensing business model, targeting its solutions at companies developing next-generation internet infrastructure, broadband, and multimedia appliances. The firm secured multiple rounds of funding to fuel its research and development and expand its customer support infrastructure. A significant funding round in 2000 raised a total of $13 million, led by Alcatel Ventures, which also resulted in a strategic addition to 3DSP's board of directors. The company also received investment from Intel Capital. During its operational years, 3DSP formed collaborations with industry players, such as its work with Pioneer Corporation to develop a highly integrated DSP solution for advanced digital video technology. The company is now considered defunct.
