Makes on-demand manufacturing easy and risk-free, from prototyping to end-part production MoreLess
Hubs, now operating as Protolabs Network, functions as an online manufacturing platform providing on-demand access to a global network of over 250 vetted manufacturing partners. The company was founded in Amsterdam in April 2013 as 3D Hubs by Bram de Zwart, Brian Garret, and Filemon Schöffer. The founders, who had prior experience at a 3D printing company, identified an opportunity to build an online platform that intelligently matches manufacturing capacity with demand, envisioning a future of more automated and decentralized production.
Initially, the platform operated as a peer-to-peer marketplace, connecting owners of 3D printers with consumers and hobbyists who needed to print designs. This model aimed to make 3D printing locally accessible by utilizing idle printers. Recognizing a larger opportunity in the professional market, the company pivoted its focus to serve engineers and product designers. This strategic shift involved expanding its service offerings beyond 3D printing to include CNC machining, injection molding, and sheet metal fabrication to cater to the B2B sector's needs for rapid prototyping and production parts.
The business generates revenue through transaction-based fees, taking a commission on each order placed through the platform. Its core service enables users to upload a CAD file, receive an instant price quote and lead time, and then automatically routes the order to a suitable manufacturing partner. This automated process significantly reduces the time it takes to get a quote and start production compared to traditional methods. The platform serves a wide range of industries, including aerospace, automotive, healthcare, and robotics, counting companies like NASA, Audi, and HP among its clients.
After securing multiple funding rounds, including a $18 million Series C in 2019, Hubs had raised a total of $30 million. In January 2021, the company was acquired by Protolabs, a global digital manufacturing leader, for approximately $280 million, plus an additional $50 million in performance-based incentives. This acquisition created one of the world's most comprehensive digital manufacturing platforms. Following the acquisition, the company rebranded from 3D Hubs to Hubs to better reflect its expanded services, and later to Protolabs Network in January 2024 to signify its full integration.
