Geothermal Energy startups
View on Dealroom
Geothermal energy currently accounts for just 0.5% of renewable capacity globally, but theoretically, just 0.1% of the Earth’s heat content could meet global energy needs for over 2 million years. Geothermal is also a 24/7 energy source, and the only truly clean at the moment, alongside nuclear energy. A key limitation of geothermal energy is that "prime" conditions are present only on 10% of the global surface. In addition to this, geothermal is 1) hard to find and 2) costly to discover. Both aspects are now seeing innovation accelerate with AI-powered geothermal discovery platforms and new technologies for deep geothermal exploitation. Big tech companies are also increasingly turning their attention to geothermal for their data centres' power needs. Microsoft is, directly and indirectly, backing Fervo Energy and Eavor Technologies, while Google is the main partner for Fervo's first next-generation geothermal plant.
