Startups saving the chocolate industry
View on Dealroom
We all love chocolate but the industry is unsustainable. The chocolate industry is responsible for huge carbon emissions, deforestation and humanitarian issues.  Cocoa is also being threatened by climate change, which might cause the loss of 1/3 of the production area. Due to extreme weather, the price of chocolate has increased 150% in the last year! Some startups are creating cocoa-free chocolate by fermentation of other beans or cultured-grown cocoa, as well as plant and insect-based alternatives. Many others focus on making conventional chocolate more sustainable by focusing on fair and regenerative farming practices and upcycling of waste, as well as traceability solutions.
