Fat is an essential part of the meat-eating experience. Alternative fats and oils (not made from animal sources) are key to reproducing the taste, aroma and texture of meat and dairy substitutes while being more sustainable for the planet (minimal resources needed, no deforestation) and human health (no cholesterol, antibiotics, and hormones), and being animal-free. Oils, such as palm oil and other tropical oils, are also a strong focus due to sustainable concerns related to deforestation. Most startups are using precision fermentation (selecting microorganisms to produce desired proteins) to create these alternatives, but also lab-grown and plant-based alternatives exist, especially cultivated meat fats. We mapped 60+ alternative fats and oils companies worlwide.
