Artificial Intelligence has widely moved from being a frontier tech to mainstream mature commercial technology. But there are still many frontier areas such as generative AI, explainable AI, privacy-preserving AI (synthetic data, homomorphic encryption, federated learning), new AI tech stack (AI acceleration, AI code optimization and error correction). We mapped over 160 European AI startups pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence. AI-first biology had a big slowdown in 2022, after record funding in 2021. Most other segments of Novel AI accelerated in 2022, including Autonomous driving and Generative AI.
