The car, and more broadly motor, insurance has been the first sector to see a widespread use of sensors in insurance to support telematics for usage-based insurance (UBI). Both newcomers and incumbents offer nowaday some form of telematics usage based insurance. However, adoption has still been low with these policies often accounting for less than 5% of the overall portfolio for established players, even if several researches point out benefits of telematic based policies in terms of driving behavior and related accidents and claims, as well as customer retention.
However, the pandemic has strongly shifted driving behaviors and customer preference towards usage based offerings.
