Parametric insurance is not new, but it has been so far mostly restricted to property catastrophe reinsurance, an important application but still a small part of the P&C insurance world. Now its adoption in broader applications is accelerating, pioneered by companies such as FloodFlash, Exante, Understory, Parsyl, Descartes Underwriting, Arbol and many others.
These insurtechs offer solutions where the premium and payout is automatically calculated from a list of parameters, bringing benefits such as: on one hand more transparent pricing and immediate, effortless claim resolution for the customers, on the other hand, reduced uncertainty for the insurers.
